History of Roamer

A history of Tradition and Visionary Spirit - The story of Roamer begins with its pioneering founder, the Swiss watch maker Fritz Meyer (1859-1926). It was born from the idea to create a robust yet elegant watch. Fritz Meyer develops their own caliber, the company naming it the "38" after his 38th birthday. In 1905, Fritz Meyer enters into a partnership with Johann Studeli, and creates the legendary MST in-house movement for Roamer.

1888

The Beginning

Founded in Solothurn, Switzerland, by Swiss watchmaker Fritz Meyer, Roamer began with just six employees, initially producing cylinder escapements for mechanical watches.

1890s–1910s

Rapid Growth & First Watches

By 1895, Roamer had expanded to 60 employees, with watchmaker Johann Stüdeli joining forces with Fritz Meyer. The brand began producing watches in 1904 and developed its first in-house movement, MST, in 1906 - growing to over 250 employees by 1910.

1920s-1930s

Expanding Production

By 1923, Roamer had reached a major milestone with the production of 1 million units. In 1932, the brand further strengthened its craftsmanship by launching its own in-house watch dial production line.

1945–1972

Global Expansion & Innovation

Roamer expanded internationally with the opening of a representative office in New York City in 1945, officially adopting the name “Roamer” in 1952. The brand later achieved major commercial success with the patented Anfibio watertight watchcase in 1955, followed by the launch of its first quartz movement in 1972.

2000s- now

Heritage Meets Innovation

Roamer returned to producing mechanical watches in 2000 and celebrated major milestones with its 125th anniversary in 2013 and 135 years of existence in 2023. In 2025, the brand continues its legacy of innovation with new launches including the HELIOS POWER collection — featuring its first solar-powered Swiss Made chronograph movement housed in a fully titanium watch.
